How to fix the recession/depression
Posted Aug 18th, 2009

Well, I’m back.

Our new president sure can talk and smile. I personally like him and I think his wife is great because her name is Michelle, just like my wife, and they are both smart girls from the south side of Chicago.

The recession/depression started before Obama took office, but everything his team is doing will only make matters worse. Everyone in America has been hurt with the current mark-to-market and the elimination of the uptick rule on short sellers. Everyone should understand that these rules were put into effect because of Enron. Before that there was the uptick rule, and the mark-to-value your beloved asset was worth. We should also understand that the combination of 535 senators and congressmen and women doesn’t mean anything. It actually means whatever they think up will make things worse. The Obama team will do nothing to create jobs, except government employees. It also means more taxes and yes, it means higher inflation down the road. In short, the American public gets it twice in the wallet.

Everyone should understand there are very few things any government does correctly. The best thing the government does is run the military. There might be a couple more but not more than two. So when you see or hear how the government will help then you might as well believe in the tooth fairy. For all of you who want a bigger Federal Government, remember one thought: what does the government produce?

Our President has a few items that I believe he is correct about, like the fact that compensation pay is out of control, but so is all this union B.S. Why are union dues so high? Why is the greatest union membership public workers and teachers (and think about why schools are failing)? I just got back from Europe. Did you know French workers pay no union dues? Everyone should understand that union leadership is the same as politicians; they don’t want anyone to be unhappy.

If you look at all of the states, cities and countries that are cutting services because they are broke from years of generous pensions and medical retirement packages, all of them will go Chapter 9 very soon. They are all broke, and the simple fact is that politicians don’t know how to manage, period.

It would be good if President Obama stepped up and stopped Federal deductions for state taxes. That would really straighten up California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, etc. The citizens would then see just how bad their politicians have managed their state.

The President says he wants to fix healthcare, education and energy. Now look at the people he has chosen. They are all good people, but they are pure bureaucrats and none of them understand how to get the job done. So I will tell you the simple way:

• Exempt the entire medical field from malpractice lawsuits. Set up a compensation group just like workers compensation for people who have a claim for malpractice. Every group would have a three-person board consisting of one doctor, one lawyer and one person approved in their local area by the mayor or council. This would allow doctors to be doctors, and do what they think is correct for their patients.
• Set up clinics for every 1,000-1,500 people that are open 24 hours and staffed with a nurse practitioner who can recommend serious problems to a doctor but can prescribe medicine for most ailments. This would be run by U.S. military medical corp. Yes, as I said earlier, only the military does it correct. The government bureaucrats should stay out of our healthcare.
• Close law schools and open more medical schools. Folks we don’t need more lawyers.
• Open more small hospitals and specialty centers.
• Set national standards for doctors so every state is the same and if there is a doctor who screws up, he is retrained and if he continues to screw up, he has his license removed.
• Medical insurance rules should be national, not state run. This allows everyone to compete.
• There are many other ideas. Groups of doctors and business people from each state should meet and come up with ideas and implementation of these ideas should take place within four months of this meeting.

The cost to doctors for medical insurance varies from $10,000 per year for a general practice to over $200,000 per year for a heart surgeon. All doctors at hospitals need medical malpractice insurance and all of us pay for this. These costs keep going up. Some states have already put a cap on damages but other states have not. It is the same with various laws. Each state lists what has to be covered by insurance.

We can reduce costs by allowing competition between insurance companies. Our President stated that Federal Express and UPS are doing OK against the U.S. Postal Service. I guess he forgot that only the Post Office can deliver first class mail and they are broke, requiring billions of dollars each year from you-know-who. It’s simple, folks, the only ones who win with government healthcare are the unions who get dues from all the new government employees. The Democrats want this so they can receive more cash donations from the big unions.

Mr. Taylor, I came across your blog while researching leaders of companies in Illinois. You are right on the money! Our economic survival is being dictated by policies of people who have never run a hot dog stand much less a business. Thus they can't understand the simple rule of job creation -- less government interference, lower taxes means more money for businesses to invest in expansion and new jobs! Keep up the good work!
